President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic Choummaly Sayasone has extended his best wishes to all Lao people on the occasion of Lao New Year (the Year of the Tiger), which falls on April 14-16.

President Choummaly reflected on the closing year, the Year of the Ox.

“The Year of the Ox was an important year in which the entire Party, army and people had the great pleasure of attaining the significant achievement of the resolutions of the 8th Party Congress and the sixth state five-year socio-economic development plan. These were the building blocks for the celebration of the important days of the Party and nation at the national and local levels, in ministries and other sections across the country.”

President Choummaly said the country was proud of its fulfillments in socio-economic development and achievements in hosting the 25th SEA Games. These achievements were reflected in economic and socio-cultural growth, and in the cooperation of Laos with regional and international friends. The national economy has continued to grow. This year, GDP growth of 7.6 percent has been recorded, people’s overall livelihoods have progressively improved, and per capita income has climbed above US$900.

The political system from the central to grass-roots levels has been rebuilt to consolidate the system. The living conditions of multi-ethnic groups have visibly improved. Laos has continued to actively develop and has built trust domestically and overseas, in line with the goals of the Party as identified by the Party and state, as well as raising the status of the Lao PDR on the international stage and earning trust from overseas.

President Choummaly said “We welcome Pi Mai Lao (the Year of the Tiger). There are various challenges and difficult points, but in general we have favourable conditions and a good momentum in many areas.”

The President urged his compatriots, people of all ethnic groups and Lao people living abroad to strengthen their solidarity, diligence, tradition of patriotism and self-determination, and to deploy their efforts and energy to exploit and develop the country’s latent potential in combination with increased international cooperation.

“We will continue to build on our great accomplishments and victories of past years and implement the resolutions of the 8th Party Congress and the sixth state five-year socio-economic development plan to achieve even greater accomplishments.

“We will also focus on addressing the effects of the economic crisis and natural disasters to ensure all multi-ethnic groups enjoy a better standard of living and ensure the country enjoys security and social order.”

At the close of the Year of the Ox and in welcoming the Year of the Tiger, President Choummaly on behalf of the Party Central Committee, National Assembly, government and Lao National Front for Construction, extended his warm greetings to government officials, Party members, soldiers, police, veteran revolutionaries, compatriots of all ethnic groups and walks of life, Lao people living abroad, foreign residents, and foreigners working in Laos.

He especially sent the greetings and good wishes of the Party and State to the armed forces, which have carried out their honourable duty in protecting the country for the happiness of the Lao people.

He also sent warm regards to government officials, soldiers and members of all ethnic groups who are currently in hospital, wishing them a speedy recovery. President Choummaly wished everyone a prosperous and happy life in the coming year and much enjoyment in celebrating the Lao New Year.
