Party Secretary General Choummaly Sayasone yesterday led government officials in celebrating the 55th anniversary of the founding of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party at the National Culture Hall in Vientiane.

Former President of the Party Central Committee Khamtay Siphandone, government leaders, retired officials, and representatives from the police, defence and education sectors attended the event.

The celebration began with the Lao national anthem, followed by speeches by Mr Choummaly, retired Party officials, students and young people.

A documentary depicting the past 30 years of the Lao PDR was shown, along with cultural performances.

Mr Choummaly highlighted the long history, achievements and political commitment of the Party in leading the Lao people to prosperity.

โ€œOn this day 55 years ago, in response to a national salvation movement driven by the Lao people and the Indochinese Communist Party, founded by President Ho Chi Minh, the Lao People's Party (now known as the Lao People's Revolutionary Party) was founded to manage the revolutionary struggle in Laos,โ€ Mr Choummaly said.

The Party came to power on December 2, 1975, after its fighting strategies achieved victory over foreign powers.

Mr Choummaly said the Party was keenly aware of the situation in the country and the aspirations of the people, resulting in the introduction of an opening-up policy to enable Laos to reach its full potential in economic development.

The Lao economy has experienced steady growth since a market-based economic approach was adopted, particularly last year when economic growth reached 7.6 percent despite a global recession.

The living conditions of many Lao people have improved and average annual income per capita is now US$900, increasing from US$85 in 1975. The number of people living in poverty dropped to 17 percent of the population in 2009.

Mr Choummaly said the Party had reaffirmed its commitment to development policies based on natural resource exploitation, aiming to remove Laos from the UN's list of least developed nations by 2020. To achieve national development goals, Mr Choummaly urged Party members and the Lao people to strengthen their solidarity and unity.

โ€œThe past 55 years have proven that solidarity and unity in Laos, and within the Party at all levels, stand us in good stead to secure the growth and development of the Party and ensure the victory of the revolution in Laos,โ€ he said.

The Party would continue to enhance friendship, special solidarity and all round cooperation between Laos and Vietnam, maintain cooperation with strategic friendly countries and enhance relations between Laos and neighbouring countries and Asean members. The Party would continue to expand development policies based on the aspirations of the Lao people and for the benefit of the people.

The Party will enhance the rights of the Lao people, creating conditions for them to monitor and improve the actions of Party members, Mr Choummaly said.
