The 7th Japanese Speech Contest was held at the Lao-Japan Budo Centre, Vientiane last Saturday, to promote mutual understanding between Lao and Japanese people and enhance Japanese language studies in Laos.

Twenty-one young Lao competitors from Vientiane Capital, Luang Prabang and Savannakhet provinces presented their Japanese language skill in reciting Japanese texts and delivering speeches which they had prepared themselves.

Clear pronunciation and good grammar is a key to the victory of the students at the 7th Japanese Language Speech Contest.

The speech contest consists of basic and intermediate levels and reciting Japanese texts.

The winner of reciting Japanese text was Mr. Paramy Phommahasay entitled whale. The first runner-up was Ms. Nataly Mekkasin and the second runner-up was Ms. Thavykham Bounphengpha.

The winner of the basic speech contest was Mr. Inpheng Vilayhong entitled education for blinded people. The first runner-up was Ms. Palika Panyasith and the second runner-up was Ms. Malaiphone Changdabout.

The winner of the intermediate was Mr. Phanida Xayavong entitled my hero. The first runner-up was Mr. Viengsavanh Ounsavath and the second runner-up was Mr. Soulasith Luanghan.

The Japanese Ambassador to Laos, Mr. Masaaki Miyashita said in the Lao PDR more young people are interested in learning Japanese language in recent years.

The Japanese Speech Contest has been organized each year since 2004 for promoting mutual understanding between Lao and Japanese people as well as for enhancing Japanese language studies in Laos, said Mr. Masaaki.

He said, more Japanese language schools and their students are keen to keep this event going, as the students need to demonstrate their Japanese language skills acquired and to motivate themselves further.

He added at present, in addition to the Japanese Language Sections of the National University and Lao-Japan Human Resource Development Centre, several private language schools in Vientiane Capital provides Japanese language education.

The contest was jointly organised by the Embassy of Japan in the Lao PDR and Japanese language schools in Laos.

The contest was attended by Mr. Ponmek Dalaloy, the Minister of Public Health and President of Laos-Japan Friendship Association and Mr. Lytou Bouapao, Vice Minister of Education, along with government officials school teachers and large audiences. -- KPL
