A 200 hectare site has been earmarked for a US$50 million vocational training complex after the government recently approved the project.
Construction of the privately funded centre is expected to begin soon, project director Chansavath Khounviset told the Vientiane Times on Friday.
The Vocational Development and Skill Labour Training Centre will be built in Dongbang village in Xaythany district, Vientiane, and is scheduled for completion in 2012.
The facility comprises 39 buildings, including classrooms and fully equipped workshops, according to the project master plan.
Once in operation, the centre will offer classes in more than 10 vocational skills such as electronics, electrical work, bricklaying and carpentry.
It is estimated the centre will produce some 6,000 skilled workers and students every year, Mr Chansavath said, adding that the facility will be the biggest of its kind in Laos.
The investor envisages sending skilled Lao workers to foreign countries as a primary aspect of his business plan, Mr Chansavath said.
This vision is in line with the goal of Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh, who on several occasions has stressed the need to develop Lao workers' skills to give them a competitive edge compared to other workers in the region.
Mr Chansavath said the government was committed to the project and would push for its realisation.
โTraining will be focused on market demand,โ he said.
Secretary General of the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Khanthavong Daravong, told the Vientiane Times earlier that new graduates from the centre will be given placements at companies, factories and construction projects to ensure they get practical workplace experience with chamber members. This would ensure they are properly qualified.
The project also intends to work closely with destination countries for Lao workers, to reassure them of the competence of graduates from the centre. โEntrepreneurs who want to hire Lao workers can visit the centre and observe their work first hand,โ Mr Khanthavong said.
He believes the centre will increase competition in the skills training business in Laos and lead to the development of workers' skills.
Officials said numerous Lao workers have been sent to jobs overseas, mostly in Thailand, but they are usually considered as unskilled so they can earn only the minimum wage.
The project will be supervised by the chamber and the ministries of Education and Labour and Social Welfare.
